Beza Community Development Association (BCDA) began in 2007 with the vision of a small group of people who met regularly to pray from Beza International church. This group heard of a need that, to them, seemed unimaginable: a community of several hundred people was living in poverty on Entoto Mountain, which is on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The majority of these people were living with HIV; many of them had come to Entoto Mountain seeking healing from the holy water given out by the Entoto Mariam Church while others came as a last resort after having been ostracized from their families and communities because of the stigma associated with HIV. Having arrived on Entoto, however, the majority of these people found themselves living in terrible conditions with no real way to meet their daily needs. There was no adequate shelter, few opportunities to make a reliable income, and no consistent quality health care was available.

After spending some time praying for the people of the Entoto community, this small group of individuals felt God leading them to do more. They began by visiting a few families in the Entoto community bringing food, blankets, and donated clothing. Very soon, however, it became apparent that more was needed and that one of the biggest needs that people living on Entoto Mountain faced was the need for a consistent source of income. It was in response to this perceived need that the Outreach’s income-generation program was begun. That program has since expanded in order to address the needs of the Entoto community more holistically.

Since then, BCDA become one of the indigenous Non-Government organizations in Ethiopia, which Association is committed to building the capacity of its own staff and that of other NGOs.
