Core Functions/programs

Women Empowerment and Health Program

  • To increase the community capacity to support vulnerable families

  • Establishing the target women with Self Help Group, conduct weekly meeting and promote group saving in which the members are access to loan to expand their own business.

  • Provision of initial seed money for start up of their business either in group or individually. The area of engagement in the SHG group includes sheep fattening, hen breeding, silk making, cotton spinning, gardening, food preparation, bread making group and other. Most of individual business engagement focuses on petty trade.

  • Provision of basic Self-Help Group (SHG) and different vocational trainings for target women (the selected women are affected or infected with HIV/AIDS) and living under extreme poverty.

  • To support target women through IGA groups and develop the IGA model to bring about sustainable self sufficiency.

  • To provide target mothers health and welfare services

  • To increase income from IGA activities to support the family needs and reduce food insecurity

  • To encourage saving as an aspect of the IGA model.

  • Provision of training in responsible parenting and financial security

  • Provision of health education trainings, home management and environmental sanitation and discussion social and economic aspects

  • To enable women engaged in micro level business to secure their livelihood and skills training initiatives successfully.

  • Provision of health care and home visits

  • Provision of family planning, Reproductive health and HIV prevention services

  • To strengthen/establish functional business networks among grassroots level practitioners

  • To promote advocacy and lobbying among communities, local government (kebele/woreda) officials and NGOs towards skills training innovative practices

  • To promote intercultural and practical/experiential learning among SHG groups

  • To develop a business model utilizing resources from intervention areas this will foster a sustainable income to support the management of the program.

 Children Education Support

        Primary Education

  • Improve the performance of target kid through tutorial support focusing on English, Mathematics and science subjects.

  • Provision of educational (scholastic) materials for target children such as school uniform, bags, exercise books, pens, pencils, sharpeners, compass, etc.

  • Provision of life skill trainings and leadership lessons.

  • Provision of individual and group counseling

  • Provision of sport, game activities and drama & theatrical art

  • Provision of basic computer application and drawing

  • Provision of summer camp and community service

    Pre-school learning
  • To provide a high quality Pre-School/Kindergarten  and early learning for children under 7  in  the community and establish a centre of excellence

  • To increase the community capacity to support vulnerable children

  • Enhancing Pre School learning of target children under 7 years enabling better performance in primary education

  • Children under the age of 3 will continue to benefit from early play opportunities with age appropriate toys when they attend the centre

  • Children aged 3 years will attend 3 half-day sessions per week to learn social and relational skills. Using play, they will be introduced to age appropriate numeracy and literacy.

  • Children aged 4-6 years will attend full time pre-school education 5 days a week. Children will follow the government curriculum to learn: Amharic, English, Environmental Science, Maths, Physical education, Music and Arts and Crafts.

 Strategic Components

Poverty reduction:

  • Addressing women unemployment who are living under extreme poverty through innovative and relevant self-employment Income Generating Activities/IGA model/schemes to break the cycle of poverty.

  • Healthy children empowered with future education and employment skills. The students in our program will receive a well-rounded and higher quality education, which will increase their marketable skills and improve employment opportunities in the future; as employment rates increase in the community, poverty rates around our intervention area will decrease.

Priority Areas

  • Improving Children Education performance and Women Empowerment /livelihoods skills training, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and family planning are at the core of BCDA’s agenda for sustainable development. 
  • BCDA technically supports work in policy reform and system management, strengthen institutions for improvement of access to quality basic education, develop the capacities of local institutions and improve quality assurance systems. 
  • BCDA also facilitates linkage to available resources, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • BCDA technically assists the target women and enhances the impact of demand – led vocational skill training initiatives
